FIRST CIRCULAR AND CALL FOR PAPERS

THE ROLE OF TOOLS IN THE ORIGINS OF THE NEOLITHIC IN THE NEAR EAST. PPN7. BARCELONA, FEBRUARY 2012.

FIRST CIRCULAR AND CALL FOR PAPERS

The Milà i Fontanals Institution from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Seminar of Near Eastern Prehistoric Archaeology (SAPPO) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) have the honour and pleasure of inviting you to participate in the 7th Workshop on tool industries in the Near East.

PLACE: The workshop will take place mainly in the Milà I Fontanals Institution (CSIC), in 15 Egipciaques st., 08001, Barcelona, while one of the sessions will take place in the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Bellaterra, Barcelona)

DATES: From 10th to 14th February 2012

THEME: THE ROLE OF TOOLS IN THE ORIGINS OF THE NEOLITHIC IN THE NEAR EAST

Thus, the workshop will deal with how tools reflect and contributed to the economic, social and ideological changes that made possible the transition from hunter-gatherer to farming communities in the Near East. Thus, the study of tools is a way to get relevant information on cultural changes. The workshop will be centred on the Pre-Pottery Neolithic Period, but contributions which would resort to the study of some Natufian and Pottery Neolithic industries in order to shed some light into the origins or the first development of the Neolithic will be welcomed. Traditionally, the workshops of which this one is continuity have been devoted to the study of chipped stone industries. However, and as an experimental option, we propose to open the scope of this PPN7 workshop, including in the topic all types of tools. The reason is simple: the methodological and theoretical approaches necessary to cope with tools are essentially the same, independently of the material in which the tool was made. We think that studying all types of tools in an interrelated way may offer new perspectives in our understanding of the Neolithic.

HOMAGE

The Workshop is conceived in honour of Marie-Claire Cauvin who has so much contributed to our knowledge of lithic tools.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Oral contributions and posters will be welcomed. Time for oral contributions will be around 20 minutes. Tentatively, the contributions will be grouped into the following headings:

1. Industries in context: current excavation projects.
2. Circulation of raw materials, tools and ideas.
3. From raw material to discard: the “chaine operatoire” approach.
4. Social and symbolic meaning of tools.
